An intense manhunt is over for a wanted sex offender, deemed “a danger to the public.”
Michael Janaskas surrendered to authorities at the Martin County Sheriff’s Office yesterday, along with his attorney.
The 29-year-old convicted child rapist and sex offender had been missing since being moved to a drug treatment center in Jensen Beach from the Pocono region of Pennsylvania last Thursday.
Instead of taking Janaskas to the Martin County Jail for registration, which is required under Florida law, the treatment center dumped Janaskas at a Walmart in Stuart.
Janaskas was convicted in 2010 of raping a child under the age of 14 and is also a known drug user from Stoudsburg, Pennsylvania.
Authorities in Pennsylvania are issuing an arrest warrant for Janaskas for violating Megans Law, which requires him to register with the sex offenders database accessible to the public.
Sheriff Snyder now wants the State Attorney to investigate the treatment center in the wake of a major mix-up that had a dangerous man wandering the streets.
