Hurricane Milton is bearing down on Florida, and its impacts could soon be felt here on the Treasure Coast. While its current projected landfall is south of Tampa, residents here should still prepare for significant weather, including heavy rain, gusty winds, and potential flooding.
Storm Status and Path
Milton has strengthened into a powerful Category 5 storm with sustained winds of 175 mph. The National Hurricane Center predicts the hurricane will make landfall near Sarasota as a Category 3 by Wednesday, then continue on a north-northeast path across the state just south of Orlando.
The storm is currently moving east at 9 mph and is around 700 miles west-southwest of Tampa. Its exact landfall remains uncertain, with the forecast “cone of uncertainty” ranging from Cedar Key to Naples.
What to Expect on the Treasure Coast
On Monday, the Treasure Coast is experiencing showers, thunderstorms, and winds up to 20 mph. These are not directly related to Milton but are part of another weather system ahead of the storm. Flood watches are already in effect and may continue for the coming days.
The situation could escalate by Wednesday when tropical storm-force or even hurricane-force winds could reach our area. Expected rainfall from Wednesday through the storm’s duration could reach 4-6 inches, possibly more depending on the hurricane’s final trajectory.
Preparation Guidelines
Meteorologists urge residents to prepare for a possible Category 1 hurricane or at least tropical storm conditions. Monday or Tuesday is the best time to put up hurricane shutters if your area is under a watch.
Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for the Treasure Coast, which includes Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties. This allows for quicker coordination of resources as we brace for potential impacts.
How to Stay Safe
If you didn’t start getting ready at the beginning of Florida’s 2024 hurricane season, you should make sure you have what you need in the event of an emergency.
Supplies: Ensure your hurricane supply kit is stocked. Essentials include food, water, and medications to last several days. If you use medical equipment requiring electricity, have a backup plan in case of power outages.
Generators: If you use a generator, make sure it’s properly ventilated to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Never run generators indoors or in enclosed spaces.
Flooding and Storm Surge: Those in flood-prone areas should monitor local alerts closely. Be ready to move to higher ground if needed.
School Closures
Indian River County: Schools are closed from Tuesday, October 8, through Thursday, October 10. They plan to reopen Friday.
Martin County: Schools will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, and after-school activities for Tuesday are also canceled.
St. Lucie County: Schools and district offices will be closed Tuesday through Thursday, with emergency shelters opening Tuesday afternoon.
