Lightning strike sparked Port St. Lucie brush fire

Port St. Lucie, Fl (treasurecoast.com)- Homes in the Spanish Lakes development of Port St. Lucie were evacuated after a brush fire broke out in the woods on the east side of the development.

According to the Florida Forest Service, a lightning strike Friday sparked the fire was reported just after 3:40 p.m. Sunday.

According to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, the evacuation order started in the area of Mediterranean Boulevard East and all other streets within the Spanish Lakes community were put under a shelter-in-place order until further notice.

Mediterranean Boulevard East was reopened to residents shortly after 8 p.m.

As of 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, all evacuation orders were lifted.

Sheriff Mascara said a severe westward wind pushed the fire into Spanish Lakes.

According to the St. Lucie County Fire District, one home was damaged by the flames.

Officials announced during a press conference that the fire consumed approximately 89 acres.

No injuries have been reported.
