For the first time in almost 40 years a subtropical storm has formed in the Atlantic Ocean during the month of January.

SUBTROPICAL STORM ALEX is currently about 560 miles south, southwest of the Azores with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.

It is the first time since 1978 that a tropical or subtropical storm has formed in the Atlantic in January.

Hurricane season officially starts June 1 and lasts until November 30.
