TreasureCoast gun debate update March 1
and beyond….
A lot has happened since the Valentines Day Masacre at Stoneman Douglas High School.
The students of Stoneman Douglas went back to school yesterday. They had enormous support. These kIds are passionate and smart. They have already brought about change. They have done more to bring this conversation to the table than anyone…ever.
They are organizing this months March For Our Lives.
They are empowering their fellow students to stand up and have a voice.
People are now coming together and having conversations. I see and hear it everywhere I go. We must talk to each other and we must listen.
They had these fabulous Goldens to help them.
This is Jacob. In June of 2016, he comforted those affected by the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando. Four months ago he flew to Vegas to help families of 58 people grieve. Today, he is in Parkland, Florida hugging students who lost classmates yesterday. He is our third 15/10 pic.twitter.com/YlrfUy2nE3

The student leaders have been to Tallahassee and DC talking to everyone and insisting on change. Even Donald Trump held a bipartisan meeting and is determined to get something done.
Rick Scott has been making the rounds across the state pushing his school safety proposal. He is not for arming teachers. Scott wants to spend 500 million dollars to hire a school resource officer for every school. He also wants to increase the minimum age for gun ownership to 21.
A new Quinnipiac University poll- taken since the mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County- shows Floridians don’t want teachers armed.
Pollster Peter Brown says by a 56-percent to 40-percent margin, Floridians oppose giving educators guns but it’s a little closer when Floridians with children in public schools are polled.
Gun dealers are reporting an uptick in South Floridians applying for concealed carry permits. One West Palm Beach gun store owner says the number of people taking the concealed carry classes has doubled.
School Board member Rebecca Negron will be hosting a town hall meeting tonight. Sheriff William Snyder and School Board member Marsha Powers will be there to discuss school safety. Other panelists include representatives from the mental health services community and religious communities . The meeting is tonight, starting at 6:30 at Martin County High School on Kanner Highway in Stuart. The event is sponsored by School Board member Rebecca Negron. Her husband is Florida Senate President Joe Negron, who has come out in support of arming teachers to protect students from school shooters.
Here is Rebecca Negron’s campaign flyer. I’m sure I’ll catch some heat for this but it is what it is.
I’m looking forward to hearing how the meeting goes.
Meanwhile, The Florida House of Representatives issued a series of subpoenas to investigate how local governments responded to the Parkland massacre and their interactions with accused shooter Nikolas Cruz before it happened. House Speaker Richard Corcoran signed them in dramatic fashion at the front of the House Chamber.
Those subpoenas are headed for the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the Broward County School Board, Broward County government, the city of Coral Springs and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. But lawmakers did NOT subpoena the Department of Children and Families… which investigated Cruz in 2016 and concluded he was stable.

Meanwhile instead of being helpful Richard Corcoran is doing his job by following the directions of the NRA. You can watch it all at NRATV and go to his twitter feed. He is obsessed with firing the Broward Sheriff Scott Israel instead of waiting for the report from FDLE. Rick Scott said to wait for the report.

At the same time, we implore our elected officials to enact common sense gun reform and pass the following regulations: https://t.co/J4OcB6XJnu pic.twitter.com/VUuFKkyk6c

Then this happened
Building on our 2015 decision to not sell modern sporting rifles, we announced important changes today:
– Raising the age for purchase of firearms and ammunition from 18 to 21 years old
– Removing online items resembling assault-style riflesSee details https://t.co/K7wnc0XEwK

So lots goin on. The best thing is we are talking to each other out here in the real world and I have faith in my friends and neighbors that we can affect change in a positive way without trampling on peoples constitutional rights.
For mental health we need local emergency teams that will work with Law Enforcement and encourage people in a variety of situations (suicidal ideation, domestic violence, delusions) to simply rehome their guns until that crisis is over. Please call your family and friends if you feel the need to shoot anyone and go seek help. This could save lives and not trample on the second amendment.
Sending out your trolls with #fakenews #falsenarratives not only does not do any good- it creates more havoc.
Someone from Stoneman Douglas said something like this: The kids are the adults and the adults are like kids. It’s true! Lets all be adults and do our job and talk calming to each other and get behind what we need to do to protect our children.
