The Treasure Coast will host several events the next week to honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, as well as their loved ones. These events will bring the community together to reflect, remember, and show respect. Here are a few gatherings to consider attending if you’re looking for a way to be a part of the commemoration.
September 11th Memorial Bridge Walk
On the morning of September 11, join the Memorial Bridge Walk in Palm City. Walk alongside firefighters and deputies to honor the sacrifices made on that tragic day. The event will take place at Jock Leighton Park from 8:30 a.m. to noon. It’s a meaningful way to show support and solidarity with the community.
Annual 9/11 Memorial Tribute
Later in the evening, head to Peter & Julie Cummings Library for a candlelight vigil. From 7 to 8:30 p.m., this quiet and solemn tribute allows the community to remember those lost in the attacks. The vigil offers a peaceful setting for reflection.
City of Port St. Lucie’s Remembrance Ceremony
At the MidFlorida Event Center, Port St. Lucie will host a remembrance ceremony starting at 8:30 a.m. Local officials, law enforcement, and community members will gather near the 9/11 monument. This event is free and open to all, offering a chance to honor the heroes and victims of that day. If weather permits, the event will be held outside, followed by a light reception inside.
Fort Pierce 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony
Fort Pierce will host its annual remembrance ceremony at Liberty Garden at 9:45 a.m. This event will pay tribute to CeeCee Ross Lyles, a local hero who was on Flight 93. The service will include a memorial statue overlooking the Indian River. It’s a fitting tribute to all who perished on 9/11, and the public is encouraged to attend.
Freedom Festival & Memorial Ruck
Port St. Lucie will also be host to the Freedom Festival and Memorial Ruck. The event, hosted by DoYouGiveARuck, honors the 343 firefighters who died on 9/11 and celebrates veterans of the Global War on Terror. It will take place at Indian River State College Pruitt Campus, featuring a 1-mile ruck march to fight poverty in St. Lucie County. There will be live music, food trucks, vendors, and more. Proceeds will support veterans and their families.
Tunnel to Towers 5k Run & Walk
The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk in Vero Beach will take place on Sunday, September 7, 2024, at Riverside Park. Starting at 7:30 a.m., this event honors the bravery of first responders and raises funds for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which supports military and first responder families. Participants can register online for this meaningful 5K to show their support and remembrance.
