It’s About Shucking Time! The Oyster Fest Returns to Fort Pierce
The Fort Pierce Oyster Fest celebrates the Fort Pierce Waterfront and all of its bounty with delicious oysters, tasty seafood dishes, ice-cold beer, tropical, drinks, a fun lineup of entertainment, and a wonderful assortment of arts and crafts and nautical themed vendors with unique merchandise booths to shop and explore.
Music will include everything from Rock, Country, and Blues as well as Island and Caribbean tunes performed by acts like Bamboo, Keith Anthony Barbrie, Johnny Debt Prestage, Davee Bryan, and the duo of Bobby Gugliuzza and Paul Granato. Be sure to visit the festival’s website for performance times.
The Fort Pierce Oyster Festival has been dedicated to saving its shells and is on track to have contributed more than 25 tons of these shells to the Oyster Reef Restoration Projects.
Oysters provide several critical ecosystem services such as filtering nutrients and particles from the water and food for shorebirds and marine animals. Unfortunately, it is estimated that oyster populations have been reduced by 85% globally.
The FL.O.O.R. (Florida Oceanographic Oyster Restoration) program actively engages the public in restoring oyster reef habitat. Oyster shells are collected weekly from local restaurants as part of the Florida Oceanographic Society shell recycling program. Then, with the aid of volunteers, FLOOR restores oyster habitat by constructing reefs with the bagged shells. Shucked shells are the foundation of oyster reef construction.
