St. Lucie County Now Accepting Backyard Chicken Program Applications

 

  1. LUCIE COUNTY – St. Lucie County’s Code Compliance Division is now accepting applications from residents residing in the unincorporated area of the county (outside city limits) who wish to participate in the backyard chicken program.

Once approved, residents may have up to five chickens kept in an enclosed coop at the rear of the property and screened from the neighboring properties. Roosters are not allowed under this program.  Chicken coops requirements:

  • Must have a minimum of 4-square-feet per chicken;
  • Not exceed 125 square feet;
  • Be completely secured from predators;
  • Be covered and ventilated;
  • Maximum height of a coop and enclosure area fence around the coop shall be six feet;
  • Must be completely screened from adjacent roadways and neighboring properties by a six-foot tall opaque or wall fence erected on the property line.
  • The coop and enclosure must be a minimum of 10 feet from the rear and side lot lines and a minimum of 20 feet from any side streets, so long as the coop and enclosure area shall be at least 25 feet from any residential structure on an adjoining lot.
