Prescribed burn planned for Savannah Preserve State Park

Prescribed burn planned for Savannah Preserve State Park

A prescribed burn is planned for today in the Savannah’s Preserve State Park. The prescribed burn will consist of approximately 25 acres of pine flatwoods and hammock. This is near the park office located south of Walton Road and west of Indian River Drive. Prescribed fires are only conducted when weather parameters are suitable. Prescribed burning mimics natural fire cycles to restore healthy forests and natural communities. They reduce undergrowth that accumulates over time and decreases the potential for wildfire. Burned lands experience an increase in native wildflowers, birds and other wildlife.
