PBSO is Investigating a Deputy Involved Shooting
Undercover deputies in the area of Lakewood Road and Military Trail witnessed a physical drug transaction between a male and female.
Deputies immediately identified themselves as PBSO deputies, verbally & by showing their PBSO badge, and interrupted the transaction.
While one deputy was dealing with the female and the other was dealing with the male involved, an unknown third male appeared. The unknown male began to strike the deputy that was dealing with the male, with a backpack, unknown contents inside.
The deputy gave numerous verbal commands identifying himself as a PBSO deputy while showing his badge.
The male continued to strike the deputy.
While trying to fend off male, the deputy was pushed back to his vehicle with nowhere to retreat, at that time the deputy grabbed his weapon and discharged it one time striking the unknown male in the leg.
Both deputies administered first aid to the unknown male until PBC Fire Rescue arrived. The unknown male was transported to Delray Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.
Both deputies received minor injuries.
Deputies involved are currently on administrative leave with pay.
PBSO Critical Incident Team which is comprised of detectives, Internal Affairs members, legal members as well as members from PBA and State Attorney Office are investigating further.
