I-95 construction creates havoc in Indian River County
Construction has created havoc on I-95 through Indian River County. Despite extra lighting, reflectors and rumble strips installed by the Florida Department of Transportation, crashes keep happening. In the 12.5 mile, stretch of construction, there have been nearly 300 accidents since work began.
The $50 million project forces drivers to change, or shift lanes numerous times and slow down to 60 miles per hour. Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar says his deputies have racked up over a hundred hours responding and blocking off traffic while crashes are cleaned up. The state is also paying for more troopers to patrol the area and crack down on speeders. State officials say they expect to complete the project by the end of the year.
