An entire week’s worth of work for munitions removal crews along the Treasure Coast led up to the moment everyone was anticipating. Crews on boats yelled “Fire in the hole!” through handheld radios and the explosions began.
Two rockets and a 500 pound bomb pulled from the bottom of the ocean were detonated just off Fort Pierce shores on Tuesday.
Susan Bartnett, Project Manager, says explosives had been there since World War II when troops were trained to blow up barriers in place on European beaches.
Last week, crews contracted by the Army Corps of Engineers identified nine explosives just offshore.
The final six munitions are scheduled to be destroyed today.
