City to plan skate park, BMX tracks at new regional parks |
PORT ST. LUCIE – The most desired elements of the City’s proposed Adventure Park will instead be planned to be a part of Port St. Lucie’s two regional parks, Torino Regional Park and Tradition Regional Park’s second phase. This move will allow these popular amenities to be built faster and residents will have less time to wait until they can enjoy them.
The City Council on Monday directed the Parks and Recreation Department to incorporate some of the Adventure Park amenities that can be managed by City staff, such as the BMX track, pump track and skate park, into the design elements of the parks currently being designed. The capital improvement program funding allocated for these projects would be redirected to construct the newest elements at the regional parks.
“We want to provide the amenities sooner to our residents. We know there is a strong desire in the community for both the skate and BMX elements,” Mayor Shannon Martin said. “This plan will piggyback off existing parks already being planned.”
The Adventure Park had been planned for city-owned land at Crosstown Parkway and Cameo Blvd. This land is now critical for our Public Works department as well as waste collection services. It is currently being utilized for the City’s voluntary bulky and yard waste drop off site. On Monday, the City Council also directed staff to seek proposals from the private sector for other elements of an adventure park, such as a climbing tower, zipline and ropes course, at another park location. This public/private partnership can help the City with the initial large capital investment, shared operational cost and safety liability issues.
Residents can watch the full discussion about this project at Monday’s Special City Council meeting on the City’s Facebook page.
