Sweethearts & Heroes segment 7: Short-term and long-term fixes

We are seven segments into our 27-part series of short videos that are intended to provide you with tips, strategies and character-related conversations about the Sweethearts & Heroes mission. In this clip, Sweethearts & Heroes co-founders Jason Spector and Tom Murphy discuss short-term and long-term fixes.

Parents and teachers often want to fix their kids’ problems, as Tom notes in this clip below, but sometimes people don’t want their problems fixed; they just want someone to listen.

Listening is a huge component of Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), which Jason has received as a classroom educator. CIT isn’t just about restraint, Jason says here; it’s also about communication.

“It’s pretty powerful stuff,” he says. “One of the most important lessons I’ve gotten out of Crisis Intervention Training is to shut up sometimes.”

Listening is key to developing any short-term and long-term fixes to bullying, according to Tom and Jason, who says long-term plans “buy time and hope for kids.” Short-term plans, however, are just as valuable — just as important and necessary. Watch this clip to hear Jason explain why, with a story about his days coaching modified football:
