With students in St. Lucie County headed back to school on Monday, their return comes with an increase in traffic related incidents due to the addition of school bus traffic and students traveling to and from school.

St Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara is participating in an initiative created by the Florida Sheriff’s Association called Operation Safe Schools.

The program’s goal, first and foremost, is to protect youths, by increased directed patrols in school zones, at school bus stops, school crossing guard locations, and residential neighborhoods during school hours.

During peak travel times, deputies will concentrate their patrols in these areas, looking for traffic law violators and keeping youngsters safe.
