Sheriff’s Investigators Arrest Animal Cruelty Suspect
On August 13, 2015, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Animal Enforcement Unit arrested 43-year-old, Amy Lynn Dvorak of Merritt Island, for multiple counts of cruelty to animals. The investigation was initiated after employees of a self-storage business located at 115 Amsdell Road in Merritt Island, reported a foul odor and cats being held in a storage unit. Deputies investigating the complaint found 23 cats being held in deplorable conditions, without proper air conditioning, ventilation, or food. There were also feces and urine covering the entire storage unit.
All of the cats were taken to the Sheriff’s Animal Care Center to be evaluated and the defendant was transported to the Brevard County Jail on a $57,500 bond.
Sheriff Ivey stated, “The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Animal Care Centers and other local rescue partners work closely with our citizens to promote and encourage proper care for pets in our community. With the many resources available in our area, there is no legitimate excuse for the hoarding of pets or maltreatment of animals that puts them at risk of suffering or death. In this particular case there was no air conditioning, ventilation, or food for these helpless animals and that is 100% unacceptable to me, our team, and the community we serve!!”
