Lifeguards closed Pepper Park Beach after a shark attacked a man in the water Monday afternoon.

A spokesman for St. Lucie County said the man was bitten while body-boarding around 1 p.m. The man swam to where lifeguards could help him to shore.

Authorities said the man suffered two deep cuts in his foot that will require stitches.

A teen from Vero Beach says he punched a shark as it attacked him in New Smyrna Beach.

Phillip Tarasovic spoke exclusively to CBS12 about the shark attack over the weekend.

The 14-year-old, a seasoned surfer, is recovering from a four hour operation on his hand where the shark tore into it.

He said he didn’t see the shark coming while surfing with a group of friends.

Phillip says he punched the shark and it let go.

The recovery will take about two months.
