After serving as mayor for seven consecutive years, Greg Oravec will step down July 1
Port St Lucie, Fl(treasurecoast.com) -Oravec, 46, announced his resignation Wednesday night after the Islamorada Village Council in the Florida Keys approved his contract as its new village manager.
The council had picked Oravec June 2 from among three finalists.
“In reading the recruitment for the position of Islamorada village manager, I felt that the recruiter, Village Council and community were speaking to me on a very deep and personal level,” Oravec said in a statement. “I couldn’t ask for a better professional fit or a better next chapter in life for my family.”
While a special election will be required to fill the position Vice Mayor Shannon Martin will take over Oravec’s responsibilities July 1. The election, which could cost the city up to $320,000, could be Sept. 21 or Dec. 7 if there’s more than one candidate, according to city documents.
Martin, who has served as District 3 councilwoman since 2010, already has filed to run for mayor of Florida’s seventh most-populous city, according to the Supervisor of Elections Office.
The City Council is expected to set the special election Monday. Filing deadline with the St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections would be July 16.
Oravec’s departure puts an end to his nearly two decades of service in various city roles. His departure, he’s said in previous statements, is due in part to financial considerations. As Islamorada village manager he will earn $169,500, more than double his mayoral salary.
