The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a new string of scam calls that recently swindled a grandmother out of $7,500 in cash.
The woman says it began last week when she got a call from a person pretending to be her grandson who said he was in jail and facing charges. She says she was told the only way to help was to send $7,500 in cash to an address in California to cover a bond, and to tell no one about the call.
She handed the package over to FedEx.
But the calls didn’t stop.
A family member convinced her to call the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say they were able to get a hold of FedEx to stop the package from being delivered, but was told the package the grandmother sent turned up empty.
A spokesman for FedEx told CBS12 they will track this case as far as they can.
