PORT ST. LUCIE – St. Lucie County’s Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department is offering American Red Cross Lifeguard Training with Oxygen Administration classes in January and March at Ravenswood Pool.
Designed for entry-level participants at all facility types, this class will teach surveillance skills, in-water rescue skills, first-aid training and professional CPR with oxygen administration, along with other professional lifeguard responsibilities. Limited to six to 10 students, participants must be at least 15 years old.
Two sessions will be held: Session 1 will take place Jan. 20 (3:30 – 5 p.m.); Jan. 22 (4 – 7 p.m.); Jan. 23 and 24 (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Feb. 6 and 7 (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.), while Session 2 runs March 16 (3:30 – 5 p.m.); March 18 (4 – 7 p.m.) March 19, 20, 21, 22 (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.). The length of each session is 32 hours.
Participants will need to demonstrate the ability to swim 300 yards continuously using each of the following strokes for at least 100 yards: Crawl, breaststroke and stroke of the participants choice for the remaining 100 yards; swim 20 yards following a feet-first dive into a minimum of seven feet of water to retrieve a 10-pound object and swim back 20 yards with the object and jump onto the pool deck within one minute and 40 seconds; and tread water for two minutes using only the legs.
The cost of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course is $200. Payment is due upon successful completion of the pre-course.
