STUART, FL – Helen Sagan, a retired music teacher and member of Boston’s renowned Chorus pro Musica, will present a three-part “Discover Opera” lecture series from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Fridays, January 15, February 12 and March 11 in the John F. Armstrong Wing of the Blake Library, 2351 SE Monterey Road, Stuart. Using humor and anecdotes about opera stars as well as DVD excerpts with English translations, Sagan’s presentation is for all those interested in learning more about opera. The programs are free and open to the public.
The schedule is as follows:

1/15 – Bizet’s “Carmen”
The bad girl of opera. Watch out for the gypsy girl Carmen! She leaves a wake of lovers behind her, but she has a date with destiny when she tangles up with the jealous Don Jose. One of the most popular operas, “Carmen” is full of excitement and colorful music.

2/12 – Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale”
here is no fool like an old fool. Don Pasquale thinks he is marrying an innocent young girl just out of the convent, but he is tricked. The happy ending goes instead to the two young lovers, his nephew and the beautiful Norina. “Don Pasquale” is a delightful opera with beautiful music and lots of laughs.

3/11 – Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos”
A stage performance, in which the tragic Greek myth of Ariadne is being played out, is invaded by a troupe of comedians who mingle with the cast and re-arrange the story. Ariadne is a clever spoof on serious opera and contains the famously difficult coloratura aria, “Grossmächtige Prinzessin.”
