Stuart police have decided to step up patrols after shootings increase in the east side of the city.

Investigators say a fight between four youths at East Avenue and Lake Street escalated into one pulling a gun and firing several shots Tuesday night.

Police say the suspects took off and 9-11 calls prompted officers to respond.

Stuart Police Chief David Dyess says they evacuated nearby businesses and Sailfish Park where many kids were playing baseball. Dyess says they’ve arrested one person involved on drug charges but are still looking for the other three.

It makes the 21st shooting in East Stuart this year. The previous was last month near Spruce Avenue. None of the reported shootings have been fatal.

Dyess says it’s unusual and they’re not taking any chances. They are increasing patrols and plan to work with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office to suppress the gun violence.

If you have any information, you’re asked to call the Stuart Police Department at (772) 287-1122
