Jupiter Family Sinking Artificial Reef in Memory of Son

Out of tragedy, a Jupiter family is sinking an artificial reef, in memory of a young man who was killed while snorkeling last summer.

Scott and Martha Harris headed out the Jupiter Inlet, on a boat Wednesday morning.

It was in the same inlet, where the Harris’ 26-year old son Andrew was killed by a boat while snorkeling. Since that tragedy, Scott Harris channeled his energies into creating a memorial for his son.

The result is the Andrew “Red” Harris Foundation Reef, a mile off Jupiter Island. The reef will consist of specially-designed concrete structures, dropped into the water.

The new reef is mentioned as an alternative to the nearby inlet where Andrew lost his life. Work crews had hoped to drop the concrete structures into the water Wednesday, but will the currents were too strong. Crews will try again later today.
