Debris Washing Up From Lost Cargo Containers

Debris from cargo containers which were lost at sea this week have been washing ashore, clogging our beaches with plastic, styro-foam and lots of coffee.

The Coast Guard is investigating how the barge Columbia Elizabeth lost as many as 25 cargo containers at sea this week.

There were dozens of people on North Hutchinson Island pulling grocery items right out of the ocean.

The Columbia Elizabeth is in Port. The Coast Guard says the crew lost up to 25 containers at sea Sunday. The debris field runs between Cape Canaveral and Palm Beach.

Much of what is washing ashore is sopping wet and ruined.

A St. Lucie County spokesperson says the freight company has hired cleanup teams to patrol and remove trash now spanning 149 miles of coastline.

The cause of the cargo drop from the Columbia Elizabeth is under investigation.
