Martin County Sheriff’s Office Responds to Disturbance

A coach is facing battery charges after witnesses say he head-butted a referee. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a disturbance Sunday afternoon at a field on Halpatiokee Park Drive in Stuart. The referee told deputies that the coach became enraged over his calls during a game on the softball field.  The ref said he ejected the coach. The coach, according to witnesses and the referee, yelled at the referee and then head-butted him. Witnesses said the referee slammed the angry coach to the ground in “self-defense.”  Other refs jumped in to separate the two men. Deputies arrested 55-year-old Edward Wallace on a battery charge.  Wallace, of North Palm Beach, was held at the Martin County Jail. He’s the softball coach at Dwyer.
