PSLPD checkpoint was the first in two decades
Port St. Lucie , Fl (treasurecoast.com) -Police last week conducted a roadside safety checkpoint as part of broader traffic enforcement initiatives, stopping more than 200 vehicles on Crosstown Parkway over several hours.
The June 30 checkpoint on westbound Crosstown Parkway at Southwest Cameo Boulevard was the first in perhaps two decades, Port St. Lucie police said. It began about 9:15 p.m. and lasted about four hours.
The checkpoint fits in with a bigger focus on traffic enforcement, safety and related issues.
Traffic complaints, such as aggressive driving, speeding or distracted driving, rank as top issues residents raise in phone calls to police. Other reasons behind the checkpoint include a stepped-up DUI enforcement program that began in October, and complaints from residents about noise from vehicles on Crosstown Parkway.
Investigators stopped every fourth vehicle, and 235 vehicles went through the checkpoint, only 58 were actually detained momentarily for violations to be addressed,” according to police.
They wrote 32 warnings; two citations; made one DUI arrest; and three driving while license suspended with knowledge arrests. Just the person arrested on a DUI charge was taken to jail.
