Teen drowns off of Jensen Beach on Saturday

Press release from Martin County BOCC regarding drowning of Venel Vaillant of Port St Lucie:

Martin County Ocean Rescue lifeguards and Fire Rescue made valiant attempts to save a 16-year old male, who became caught in a rip current and drowned this afternoon at Jensen Beach. The victim was among a group of five individuals that had entered the water at their own risk at the time of the event. Lifeguards were flying red flags due to the hazardous surf conditions, indicating rip tides were present.

At approximately 3:00 p.m., lifeguards observed five individuals in the water. Lifeguards advised the group to exit the water. As the group made their way to the shore, the teenager lost his balance, became caught in a rip current and was pulled under the water.

Lifeguards used ATVs and jet skis to search for the victim. Fire Rescue’s Dive Team and Lifestar helicopter participated in the search. In addition, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit and Air Unit participated in the search. Approximately one hour later, the victim was located in the water.

Lifeguards and Fire Rescue performed CPR on the victim on the shore. The victim was transported to the hospital.
