St Lucie County Hurricane Dorian Update 6: Additional Shelters Open, Evacuations Issued

 

  1. LUCIE COUNTY – Hurricane Dorian is still tracking dangerously closed to St. Lucie County with tropical storm force winds and heavy rain bands for a prolonged timeframe Monday, Sept. 2 through Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Evacuations

Mandatory evacuations for residents on the barrier island (North and South Hutchinson Island), those living in low-lying coastal areas and manufactured homes/mobile homes will begin Sunday, Sept. 1 at 2 p.m. Entry to the barrier islands will be limited to residents and business owners starting at 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2.  At some point Monday, depending on the winds, access on and off the island will be shut down. You will not need a re-entry placard to enter the island after the storm but will need two forms of documentation proving ownership or residency.

Shelters

St. Lucie County’s Public Safety staff, in cooperation with St. Lucie Public Schools and the America Red Cross, will open shelters on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 2 p.m., ahead of Hurricane Dorian.

Uber/Free Rides

Uber today announced it will be offering free round trip rides, up to $20 each way, to and from a state-approved evacuation shelter. Details here on how to redeem a free round trip, up to $20 each way, to and from a state-approved evacuation shelter*.

  1. Open your app and tap “Payment” in your app menu
  2. Scroll down to Promotions
  3. Tap “Add Promo Code”
  4. Enter code DORIANRELIEF then tap “Add”
  5. Select any of the state-approved Florida evacuation shelters listed at www.FloridaDisaster.org/info.

Meeting Cancelations/Closures

St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) will remain closed on Tuesday, Sept. 3.  Parents, students and staff are asked to refer to the SLPS web page, social media outlets, School Messenger and local media partners for updates.

All St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners offices, including libraries and special facilities, as well as the Clerk of the Court, Courthouse, Property Appraiser, Supervisor of Elections and Tax Collector will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The St. Lucie County Board of County Commission meeting for Tuesday, Sept. 3 and the Code Compliance meeting for Wednesday, Sept. 4 have been canceled.

All St. Lucie County beaches, parks and preserves are closed. Lifeguards have been pulled from the beaches to assist with shelters.

Public Information Lines

Public Information Line – 772-460-HELP (4357) – will be open Sunday, Sept. 1 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Reopening at 8 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 2. Please reserve 911 for emergency calls.
