PSl woman who stole disabled veteran’s wallet arrested

 Karen Ann Desberg turned herself in to the St. Lucie County Jail on June 5. This happened after PSL Detective Chunn notified her that there was a warrant for her arrest for stealing a disabled Veteran’s wallet.

The investigation into the theft of the wallet began on May 21, 2017, when police met with the victim at the Publix located at 9100 S. US Highway 1.  The victim told police that on May 20, 2017 he accidentally left his wallet at the checkout counter after his purchase. 

The staff at Publix was able to located video surveillance of the victim’s transaction and what transpired afterward.  The video showed the victim complete his transaction then leave his wallet on the check-out counter.  The customer behind him, described as a white female in her mid to late 30s, large cross tattoo on her right upper arm, and accompanied by two male juveniles take the wallet and put it into her purse.  The female did not make any attempt to find the owner or turn the wallet over to Publix employees. 

On May 25, 2017 Port St. Lucie Police posted a picture of the suspect on the Department’s Facebook page asking for help in identifying the suspect.  The detective received a flurry of phone calls with the identity of the suspect, Karen Desberg.  He then conducted interviews with Desberg who admitted to taking the wallet. 

 The detective presented the case to the State Attorney’s Office and ultimately secured a warrant for petit theft.  Desberg was notified of the outstanding warrant and turned herself in to the jail.
