Piper Aircraft, Inc. announced yesterday that the company is laying off up to 150 employees at their Vero Beach headquarters. The company claimed that the layoffs had to happen because aircraft deliveries had begun to slow.
Jacqueline Carlon from Piper Aircraft spoke about the difficult position the company was in. She states it is an agonizing decision that impacts all involved.
Piper’s been in the business since 1937. Over the decades their Vero plant grew, then shrank in the recession. But now again, it’s the volatile global markets impacting their international sales, and forcing them to cut back on production.
The company is the single largest private employer in Indian River County. Piper is working with other aviation firms and state unemployment counselors to help place their former employees into new jobs.
