Met Mart robber arrested in 46 minutes

Suspect in armed robbery of Met Mart arrested within 46 minutes.

Sheriff Ken J. Mascara announced the arrest of Robert George Hewitt, 21, for armed robbery of the Met Mart in Port St. Lucie.

According to Sheriff Mascara

According to Sheriff Mascara, 9-1-1 dispatchers received a call at 8:30 a.m. They said  that someone had walked into the Met Mart convenience store. He pointed what appeared to be a gun inside a sock at the store clerk and demanded money. The suspect fled the store in a white, four-door car and was described as a 5’5” black male wearing a brown jacket.

“As soon as 9-1-1 dispatched the information out to both our agency and the Port St. Lucie Police Department, deputies and officers were on scene, obtaining critical information from the clerk and witnesses and canvassing the surrounding area,” said Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.

“We had both marked and unmarked units from both agencies as well as our K-9 unit in the area.”

According to Sheriff Mascara, the victim’s description of the vehicle and a license plate number allowed deputies to locate the address where the vehicle was registered.

“Undercover detectives drove by the house and observed a car matching the description from the clerk backed into the driveway,” Mascara said. “We established a perimeter around the house and then made contact with the occupants.”

According to Sheriff Mascara, a male matching the description given by the victim, was found inside the home in the process of shaving his head.

“It was clear he was trying to alter his appearance,” Mascara said.

Arrested

Hewitt was arrested at his home in the 500 block of SE Anchor Lane and charged with robbery with a firearm and booked into the St. Lucie County Jail on a $30,000 bond.

“This is a true testament to how our dispatch center along with multiple agencies work together without boundary lines, gather vital information and make an arrest to bring to justice a street thug that thought he could get away with victimizing our community,” Mascara said.
