MCSO :NUMBER OF UNLICENSED DRIVERS IN MARTIN COUNTY INCREASING
Driving without a license is illegal, but that’s not slowing unlicensed drivers from getting behind the wheel. Just last night, Martin County Sheriff’s Deputies wrote criminal citations to four separate individuals who were behind the wheel without a license. One of those motorists was even intoxicated. These citations were not for suspended or revoked licenses. These are individuals who have never held a valid driver’s license, but were driving anyway.
29-year old Tomas Francisco-Manuel was more than twice the legal limit when he stopped for a traffic violation. He was charged with DUI, driving without a license, and possessing a counterfeit social security card.
Unfortunately, unlicensed driving is becoming a daily occurrence in our area. In 2021, MCSO wrote 353 citations for this offense. In 2022, 471 citations were issued. This year is off to a dismal start with 73-citations issued with 11-months to go.
Driving without a license is a second degree misdemeanor punishable with a fine of up to $500.00 and jail time. Unlicensed drivers who are caught, could have their vehicles towed and will be required to find an alternate ride home.
The increase in unlicensed drivers in our area poses challenges for other motorists. Unlicensed drivers are not properly trained and are uninsured. Licensed motorists should always drive defensively, keep your eyes on the road, and make sure you hold insurance that covers you and your property in the event you are involved in a crash with an unlicensed, uninsured driver.
