Update May 29,2018

A large residential condominium complex caught fire yesterday evening in Stuart. It happened at the Cedar Point Villages on East Ocean Boulevard, a community for people ages 55 and older. Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said at least 10 units were likely a total loss. It’s believed the fire started on the second floor, and then spread to the attic, allowing it to travel quickly from unit to unit.

While there is no official word on what caused the fire, Sheriff Snyder said a resident dropped a cigarette in his apartment.

Two people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation but are expected to be ok. One cat did die in the fire. The Red Cross is helping the displaced residents.
