CNN is reporting that the Federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has launched an investigation into deaths of nine babies following open heart surgeries at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
The investigation came in response to a CNN story last week that showed between 2011, when the program started, to 2013, the hospital had a 12.5% mortality rate for open heart surgery, three times the national average.
St. Mary’s released a statement, saying that they had not been contacted by the Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, but will fully participate in any survey or evaluation by CMS.
