Indian River Sheriff investigating shootings, one fatal (body cam video)
Indian River County, Fl(treasurecoast.com)- The Indian River Sheriff is investigating shootings, one fatal. These shootings took place overnight in Indian River County. One of involved Indian River County Sheriff’s deputies.
The deputy-involved shooting occurred at the Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital.
Sheriff Eric Flowers held a press conference today. He said there were multiple deputies present in the ER at Cleveland Clinic in Vero Beach for a variety of reasons. He said there was a 29-year-old man who was brought there on March 25 after attempting to hang himself, as well as cutting his legs and wrists. The Sheriff said the ER was busy and this man was left on a gurney for a long time.
This man grabbed a pair of scissors and ran throughout the hospital around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night.
The Deputies chased him and he turned and raised the scissors at them. When this happened the deputies shot and killed the man. Sheriff Flowers said this was within a five second time span.
“Nobody wants to take a life, our folks definitely don’t want to ever have to do that, but in this instance they were so close to him and he was charging at them with these sharp scissors that they had no choice but to do what they did.” Sheriff Flowers said.
The second shooting occurred in a home. Two people were injured.
A man accidently shot through his hand and struck his wife around 9 p.m. at their home on 59th Court, according to Sheriff Eric Flowers. The wife was struck in the shoulder, and is in stable condition at a nearby hospital.
The woman was transported by air to the hospital, while the man was transported to the Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital for treatment.
This shooting is believed to be accidental according to Sheriff Flowers.
Both situations are under active investigation.
