Hurricane Matthew Update
The National Weather Service in Melbourne and the State Emergency Operations Center briefed Indian River County Officials earlier this morning. The Indian River County Emergency Operations Center is currently at a Level II activation and will go to full activation tomorrow morning at 6:00 A.M. Throughout the remainder of the day, parts of Indian River County including the barrier island are under a voluntary evacuation. As of 8:00 A.M. on Thursday morning, a mandatory evacuation order will be issued for the barrier island, mobile/manufactured homes, low lying areas, and substandard housing. The following shelters will open Thursday, October 6th, 2016, at 8:00 A.M.:
Freshman Learning Center, 1507 19th Street, Vero Beach
Oslo Middle School, 480 20th Avenue SW, Vero Beach
Sebastian River Middle School, 9400 County Road 512, Sebastian
Liberty Magnet School (Pet Friendly Shelter), 6850 81st Street, Vero Beach
Treasure Coast Elementary School (Special Needs Shelter), 8955 County Road 510, Sebastian
Please remember that emergency shelters are a last resort for those who have nowhere to go. If you have an alternative, we ask that you use those before entering an emergency shelter.
All bridges to the barrier island in Indian River County will be closed when sustained winds reach 39 miles per hour. If you have not yet evacuated by that time, you will not be allowed to cross the bridges. Law enforcement agencies and the Emergency Operations Center do not issue passes or any other credentials for crossing the bridges. After the hurricane, residents with identification showing they live on the barrier island will be allowed to return when it is deemed safe.
9-1-1 should be used during emergency situations and not for questions. Non-emergency questions should be directed to Indian River County Emergency Operations Center Hot-line at 772-226-4000. Power and other utility outages should be reported to the provider company.
The National Weather Service has stated that Hurricane Matthew is a very dangerous storm capable of catastrophic danger. Please take all necessary precautions during the remainder of the day, as we expect conditions to deteriorate on Thursday afternoon.
