At approximately 6:34 a.m. Monday, October 5, 2015, Fort Pierce Police Officers responded to 3265 US Highway 1 in reference to a vehicle versus pedestrian.

The body of a 60-year-old white male, who lived in Port St. Lucie, was found in the southbound, right-hand lane of US Highway 1.

The man, who was lying in the path of oncoming traffic, was struck by the vehicle, driven by Laurence Sommers, 48, of Fort Pierce. Sommers was driving a 2008 van towing a trailer and on his way to work.

The southbound lanes of US Highway 1 south of Edwards Road to Southland Drive were closed for approximately 45 minutes and then traffic was rerouted to the center lane of US Highway 1 while officers conducted the traffic-crash investigation.

Also, a St. Lucie school bus stop near the crash was temporarily relocated north of the scene.

All lanes of traffic were reopened for southbound travel at approximately 10:30 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing to determine what happened.
