About Donald B. Moore Preserve

Donald B. Moore Preserve is a 78-acre hammock located along the Indian River Lagoon. The site contains old live oaks and cabbage palms and features two interpretive trails. Local historians believe this location was the site of the 1849 Russell/Barker skirmish, a conflict that contributed to the start of the Third Seminole War.

The northern trail in the preserve highlights the native plant species found in the area. The surrounding habitat consists of a mix of hammocks, mangrove swamps, and bay gall swamps, supporting various plant and animal species. The southern trail provides historical context, guiding visitors to points of interest such as a small homestead, an illegal still, and remnants of the turpentine industry. Trail markers and a pamphlet also provide details about the site’s history.

A short nine-basket disc golf course is available within the preserve. An observation tower also offers panoramic views of the Indian River Lagoon, a popular spot for birdwatching. The area also includes picnic tables and a grill for visitors.
