City of Port St Lucie Proclaims Dec. 1 #GivingTuesday – Living Well in PSL Day of Giving
The City of Port St Lucie has proclaimed Dec. 1 #GivingTuesday – Living Well in PSL a Day of Giving. #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners made up of charities, families, businesses, and individuals to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.
The City of Port St Lucie partnered with #GivingTuesday to demonstrate our commitment and effort in helping make a positive change for the best interest of all community members.
#GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to kick-off the holiday giving season to inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities and to come together for one common purpose; to celebrate and encourage giving.
Currently, more than 30,000 corporate and nonprofit organizations in over 68 countries have participated in the initiative.
The City of Port St Lucie has worked tirelessly to build a safer, healthier, stronger place to live and raise families. The city established the Living Well in PSL wellness program to inspire and help residents live happy and healthy lifestyles. The Living Well in PSL mission is to provide accessible fitness opportunities to youth, underserved communities, the elderly and individuals with disabilities.
According to a 2011 Florida Department of Health study, 70% of adults in St. Lucie County are obese or overweight. Today, approximately 61% of the children living in our community qualify for free and/or reduced lunch meaning their family is living at or below the Federal Poverty Index. Due to the socio-economic status of these families, they do not have access to fitness equipment at local private fitness clubs or centers.
Our Living Well in PSL vision is for every resident to have access to a cost-free exercise space within walking distance of their homes. The Living Well in PSL Family Fitness Zone will be the first of its kind in our community and hopefully the first of many Family Fitness Zones networked throughout the city. We believe that every individual can and should enjoy the health benefits of a more active lifestyle. The installation of this outdoor exercise equipment will also help with the city’s solution of reducing obesity in children and adults in the community. The use of this equipment will be free and open to anyone whenever they want to use it. One’s lack of financial resources should not be a roadblock to personal health and wellness.
