Barge Crashes into SR528 Bridge in Indian River
At approximately 8 A.M., the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 528 bridge over the Indian River along with members of the Cocoa Police Department, Florida Department of Transportation, Fish and Wildlife, and U.S. Coast Guard, after a barge carrying a crane reportedly struck a portion of the bridge causing damage.
Both East and West bound lanes of 528 were temporarily closed between US1, Cocoa, and SR3, Merritt Island while FDOT inspected the bridge. FDOT determined the bridge was safe to resume normal traffic operation.
The U.S. Coast Guard will be conducting an investigation regarding the vessel and circumstances of the crash.
