About Avalon State Park

Located on North Hutchinson Island, Avalon State Park is part of the Florida State Parks system. What separates Avalon State Park is not a long beach, but the fact that the beach is undeveloped.

This untouched beach park is home to a plethora of wildlife and an important nesting site for endangered species like the loggerhead, Atlantic green, and leatherback turtles.

The water is great for swimmers and snorkelers as long as you’re careful about the debris left underneath the surface by warfare exercises during World War II.

The beach is great for sunbathing and observing wildlife. Anglers can also try some saltwater fishing. The dunes are a great place to watch wildlife as the gopher tortoises roam and forage there and in the nearby trees.

Shelters picnic tables provide the perfect place to spend some time with family in the great outdoors. Hikers can explore the trails that meanders along the dunes and the beach to the Indian River Lagoon.

Avalon State Park not only has a secluded beach measuring 1.7 miles but also great surfing. The topography of this coastline creates ideal waves for surfing, especially when the tide’s incoming and the winds are from the west.

For convenience, there are public restrooms and shower stations to wash off the sand and salt.
