Author Speaks on Building a Child’s Brain

Dana Suskind, M.D., author of Thirty Million Words: Building a Child’s Brain speaks at 3:00p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, at the Kane Center, 900 SE Salerno Road, Stuart.

This special session for community organizations and parents of infants, toddlers, preschoolers and primary school-aged children will emphasize early intervention for developing the neural circuitry to grow children’s brains.  After the keynote presentation, there will be a special kickoff of Martin Reads! by Jennifer Salas, Library Director of the Martin County Library System.

Suskind is the founder and director of the Thirty Million Words Initiative, a professor of surgery at the University of Chicago and director of the Pediatric Cochlear Implant Program.  Thirty Million Words is an extension of Dr. Suskind’s Project ASPIRE, which she created to assure that her young patients from disadvantaged backgrounds reached their full listening and spoken language potentials.

“Listen. Talk. Read. Write. These are essential skills in early childhood development. Dr. Suskind’s strategy directed at children through early intervention will reinforce that listening and talking during the early stages of the developing brain will tremendously improve children’s spoken communication and cognitive abilities,” says Laurie J. Gaylord, Superintendent.

The event is sponsored by Martin County School District, Helping People Succeed and A Law Firm of Lauri J. Goldstein & Associates.

Tickets are $25 per person. For groups of 10 or more from the same organization, please contact the Martin County School District for a special group rate.  Seating is limited and reservations can be made online at martinschools.org.  Copies of Dr. Suskind’s book will be available for purchase at the event from Barnes and Nobles with proceeds benefitting MCSD.
