18th Annual Thanksgiving Trot Against Poverty 5K

  • 3280 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach

The Thanksgiving Trot Against Poverty 5K takes place annually in Indian River County as a professionally timed race for runners, joggers, and walkers of all ages and fitness levels. The community tradition combines healthy holiday activity with fundraising for United Against Poverty, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering individuals toward economic self-sufficiency.

Race Day Features

The event offers more than a standard 5K. Participants enjoy:

  • Professional race timing – Accurate results for competitive runners and casual participants
  • Post-race breakfast – Sweet potato pancakes and sausage served after the race
  • Turkey Tom – The beloved 25-foot inflatable turkey mascot
  • Little Turkey’s Race – Free ¼-mile race for children 6 years old and under

The little turkey’s race provides young children with their own racing experience before the main event starts. Post-race breakfast brings participants together to celebrate their accomplishment and connect with fellow community members.

Registration Options

Early bird pricing and group savings are available. Participants can register at trotagainstpoverty.org. The event also includes peer-to-peer fundraising opportunities where individuals create fundraising teams to amplify their impact.

Creating a team allows friends, families, and coworkers to combine their efforts and raise additional funds beyond race registration fees.

Supporting the Mission

All proceeds benefit United Against Poverty of Indian River County. The organization provides multiple programs designed to help individuals and families achieve economic stability:

  • Member Share Grocery Programs (MSGP) – A dignified food and household assistance program where participants personally select nutritious food items their families need
  • Crisis Stabilization Program – Provides support for those facing instability in their lives
  • Success Training Employment Program (STEP) – Workforce development program dedicated to enhancing job-readiness skills
  • Build UP Program – A 3-phase program providing hands-on training and skills to secure in-demand, high-paying employment in trades, construction, and manufacturing fields

The race raises both funds and awareness for these programs. Participation directly contributes to helping neighbors in need achieve economic self-sufficiency.
