South Strong Preserve is a conservation property located along the South Prong of the Sebastian River near County Road 510 in Sebastian, Florida. The preserve was assembled through the acquisition of two parcels on both sides of the roadway and functions primarily as a protective buffer for the river system. Much of the upland area consists of former citrus groves that are now fallow. In contrast, the floodplain contains bottomland forest with a mature canopy of cypress, water hickory, cabbage palm, and mixed hardwoods.
The preservation of this tract plays an important role in reducing environmental impacts to the Sebastian River. By removing active agricultural use, the County has reduced the risk of nutrient runoff from fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. In addition, conservation prevents future residential development that could introduce further pressure on the river corridor.
At this time, the preserve is managed solely for conservation purposes. Planned improvements include passive recreation features; however, these amenities have not yet been constructed. The site currently supports wildlife habitat and contributes to long-term water quality protection within the river system. The public is encouraged to learn about the preserve’s role in regional conservation through available County resources.
Note: The preserve is not open to public access at this time, as it remains under development and planned improvements are still pending.
