Pelican Island Anniversary is an annual celebration honoring the founding of Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, the first National Wildlife Refuge in the United States. The event features historical presentations, wildlife education, and community activities held at several locations across the area.
A highlight of the celebration is a living history appearance by Joe Wiegand portraying Theodore Roosevelt. Through presentations and meet-and-greet opportunities, visitors can learn about the creation of Pelican Island and the early history of the National Wildlife Refuge system.
Educational exhibits and wildlife displays are also part of the celebration. Local groups such as the Indian River County Historical Society, Pelican Island Audubon Society, and the Sebastian Area Historical Society participate with displays and hands-on exhibits highlighting conservation and regional history.
