Ghosts of Fort Pierce Past Historic Walking Tours

  • Main Street Fort Pierce, A E Backus Avenue

Ghosts of Fort Pierce Past Historic Walking Tours brings local history to life through guided storytelling walks in Downtown Fort Pierce. Main Street Fort Pierce organizes the annual event, rotating routes and historical figures each year to showcase the community’s rich past spanning from the 1880s to World War II.

How It Works

Six separate tour routes operate over three evenings. Each tour lasts approximately one hour and follows a different path through downtown Fort Pierce. Participants walk to six or seven stops per route where actors portray significant historical figures or share stories about notable structures.

Tours run rain or shine. Registration is required. The event targets adult audiences but welcomes all ages.

The Stories You’ll Hear

Downtown Fort Pierce preserves visible connections to its history. The P.P. Cobb building, dating back to the 1880s, stands as the oldest surviving structure in the area. The site earned its name from the remains of a Second Seminole War U.S. military fort.

Railroad tracks reached Fort Pierce in 1894, spurring regional population growth. Most historic downtown buildings date to the 1920s during Florida’s land boom era. Fort Pierce’s role in training Navy Frogmen during World War II triggered another wave of expansion that led to Port St. Lucie’s development.

Main Street Fort Pierce captures these layered stories through annual walking tours. Tour routes and featured “ghosts” rotate yearly to provide returning participants with fresh content.

Tour Areas

Routes cover different sections of downtown Fort Pierce:

  • North 2nd Street – Focuses on early settlement, frontier life, and railroad expansion
  • Central 2nd Street – Explores commercial development and Florida land boom architecture
  • South 2nd Street – Highlights civic buildings, prominent families, and cultural landmarks
  • Waterfront – Covers maritime history, military presence, and early trade
  • Edgartown – Showcases neighborhood development and local personalities
  • Peacock Arts – Celebrates artistic heritage and cultural contributions

Check-in locations vary by tour route and include historic buildings, churches, and Main Street Fort Pierce’s office.

Planning Your Visit
